(Online) hoorcolleges?
In de eerste Volkskrant van het jaar schreef Prof. Jan Derksen dat hoorcolleges moeten worden afgeschaft en alleen nog maar online moeten worden aangeboden. De concentratieboog van studenten is volgens hem te kort en hij heeft geen zin om nog langer tegen ongeinteresseerde, Whatsappende en etende studenten aan te praten.
Daarbij vermeldt hij dat het vroeger beter gesteld was met de aandacht van studenten, mede omdat de zaalwacht er op toe zag dat de broodtrommels gesloten bleven.
Het stuk van Derksen heeft veel reactie opgeroepen, waarbij de meeste mensen (studenten en docenten) zich negatief uitlaten over het uitsluitend online aanbieden van colleges. Daarbij wordt impliciet aan Derksen de vraag gesteld of hij zijn colleges misschien interesanter moet maken om de aandacht vast te houden: een goede docent inspireert zijn publiek en houdt de aandacht vast.
Als HBO docent hoor ik ook verschillende reacties van collega's op het fenomeen 'online colleges' en op het feit dat studenten moeten worden 'ge-entertaind'.
"Ik ben aangenomen om kennis over te dragen, niet om als cabaretier voor de klas te staan" of uitspraken van gelijke strekking komen dan nog al eens voorbij.
Of het vroeger beter was met de concentratie van studenten, durf ik niet te zeggen. Wel weet ik dat we nu veel meer mogelijkheden hebben om het onderwijs beter, efficienter en aantrekkelijker te maken. Waarom niet experimenteren?
Zelf probeer ik op kleine schaal nieuwe (technische) middelen uit als online les geven (dus live, niet als opname), een wiki door studenten laten vullen als methode om kennis te expliciteren en het openbaar aanbieden van lesmateriaal in een repository. Drie jaar geleden vroeg ik aan de facilitaire dienst van mijn instelling of colleges van een collega konden worden opgenomen, zodat de studenten de uitleg over de lastige stof thuis nog een keer konden nakijken. Daar bleek geen voorziening voor te bestaan.
Inmiddels bestaat die voorziening wel bij een andere opleiding, met positieve resultaten: studenten blijven niet weg, tonen zich positief over het gebodene, en de toetsen worden significant beter gemaakt dan voorheen. Bovendien geven de docenten aan dat ze kritischer kijken naar de kwaliteit van hun eigen lessen.
De discussie nav het stuk van Derksen is wat mij betreft veel te eenzijdig. Reeds sinds de jaren '90 kennen we de term blended learning: afwisseling van online leren en contactonderwijs. En dan zijn er zoveel varianten van online: powerpoint met voice-over, filmpje van leraar voor het bord zonder publiek, opnemen van een regulier college, virtual classroom en tenslotte speciale animaties en andere filmpjes die ingewikkelde onderwerpen beeldend kunnen toelichten.
Zo probeer ik op dit moment samen met collega's een blended learning module op te zetten over het onderwerp 'Literatuuronderzoek' We hebben daarbij de medewerking van een bedrijf dat al jaren online cursussen bouwt voor het bedrijfsleven. Een levendig platform met interactieve elementen moet de studenten prikkelen om actief aan de slag te gaan.
Iedere methode en iedere combinatie van methoden dient andere doelen. Laten we niet de vorm (wel of niet online colleges) als uitgangspunt nemen, maar het doel: efficient en aantrekkelijk onderwijs. Ik ben er van overtuigd dat vormen van online leren daar een positieve rol in kunnen vervullen. Als de voorstanders zich daarin genuanceerd opstellen, dan kan de weerstand van de ongenuanceerde tegenstanders die niets nieuws willen proberen wellicht worden overwonnen.
Oh ja: bijna vergeten: op de werkvloer moet het gebeuren en daar moeten de ideeen vandaag komen, maar laat het management het alsjeblieft faciliteren en stimuleren!

Onderzoek, onderzoek
Hogescholen in Nederland willen zich steeds meer profileren met onderzoeksactiviteiten. Een aantal jaren geleden werden lectoraten ingesteld, maar soms blijven dat eilandjes binnen de instelling. Dus worden wij als docenten ook steeds meer aangespoord om ons, al of niet samen met een lectoraat, toe te leggen op onderzoeksactiviteiten. En natuurlijk moeten we zoveel mogelijk proberen ook onze studenten daarin mee te nemen. Oneerbiedig gezegd kun je hogescholen ervan verdenken dat ze universiteitje willen spelen. Toch zie ik ook wel de voordelen: een onderzoekende houding zorgt dat docenten en studenten zich kritisch opstellen, literatuur leren te bestuderen en verwerken, zorgvuldig formuleren en nieuwsgierigheid aan de dag leggen. Competenties die uitstekend bij IDM passen, dus daar kun je niet tegen zijn. Ik moet er wel bij zeggen dat onderzoek op deze manier meer een middel dan een doel lijkt te zijn, maar in het kader van onderwijs is dat misschien helemaal niet zo'n probleem.
En wat doe ik er zelf aan?
Als student aan de master Culturele informatiewetenschap ben ik met medestudenten een onderzoek aan het uitvoeren naar het gebruik van universiteitsbibliotheken. En in het kader van mijn scriptie zal ik een onderzoek verrichten voor muziekbibliotheken in Nederland. Het exacte onderwerp kan ik helaas nog niet geven.
Bij IDM zijn we allemaal aardig onderzoek-minded: onze alumni-conferentie op 13 mei heeft als thema 'Onderzoek van vandaag is de praktijk van morgen' en studenten die afstuderen doen altijd gebruikers- en ander onderzoek in het kader van een advies.
Binnenkort praat ik met een aantal lectoren van de HHS over de mogelijkheden om de onderzoekscomponent nog zwaarder in het onderwijs te trekken.
Wat het uiteindelijk allemaal oplevert?
Dat gaan we over een paar jaar maar eens onderzoeken...;)

How to sell 2000 shares in 4 weeks: use social media!
My last blogpost was about the course working 2.0 and the book we (i.e. the students) are preparing. To make publication possible, we had to sell 2000 shares of 5 euro each via the website tenpages.com.
Thanks to the social networks of 50 students and some teachers we managed to sell all the shares in only 4 weeks!
We received support from people we didn't know before: thanks to all our tweets, blogposts, facebook-messages people learned about our plans and decided to buy shares.
Guru's of the new way of working, founders of leading websites, companies: they are really interested in the vision of generation Y towards the New way of working. And in meantime we receive invitations to give presentations on conferences. A nice support for our students who spend lots of energy to write and edit the book.
It will take some time before the book is ready, but it will be worth waiting!

Course working 2.0 halfway!
5 weeks ago I mentioned the start of our course Working 2.0. Now the Christmas holidays start and we are halfway. What came of our plans until now?
Well, we have 10 working groups with students and every group has another task to work on: advising multinational Ahold about Google apps, creating a campaing for our National airline KLM, another task for Microsoft Netherlands and so on.
One of the projects that has a real spin-of is the publication of the book "New way of working according to Generation Y" (in Dutch...;-).
For the students it is a really exciting experience to work on a book that will be published. For our school it is good publicity of course.
The book will only be published if we can sell 2000 shares of 5,- each. We are expecting our families and friends to support us ofcourse...

And last but not least: thanks to the contacts I made in Ankara, I met a researcher who is interested in the 2.0 adaption of young people. Together we will do a research about the 2.0 adaption of students who did our course a year ago. What is still left of their enthousiasm for 2.0 and the new way of working after one year?
There is a lot more to tell, because in meantime I finished the first part of my master-study information science at the University of Amsterdam, and I am preparing a presentation for a conference in april. But more about that in a next blog!

Start of the new course about the new way of working
In September I gave a poster presentation at a conference in Ankara about the course “Working 2.0”.
The Hague university organizes this course every year from November-February.
During the course, students learn how social media can be used in an professional environment and how this can lead to a new way of working.
Main teacher of the course is Jan Krans, special consultant at Atos Origin, an international ICT service provider.
This week we started a new edition of the course with 65 enthusiastic students from different departments of our university. Right after the beginning the students started to open accounts on Twitter, Delicous, Foursquare, Google apps and others. Via the hashtag #kb33 on Twitter, the students share their experiences, discuss and update those who can not be present.
Jan Krans is an inspiring personality with a giant personal network. He has formulated several interesting tasks for the students: organizing events, writing advice reports about the use of Google apps in education, editing a book, advising companies about the New way of working, etc.
The studens have formed groups and each group will fulfil one of the tasks. This week was only a start, but it looks very promising!
I am proud to be part of it as coordinator, but the credits for the content are for Jan.
I will keep you updated!

Istanbul and Ankara
This time a blog in English, because I want my new Turkish friends to be able to read it.
Last week I was with my collegues Willy, Klaas Jan and Jos in Istanbul and Ankara. Due to the fog in Amsterdam, our flight was delayed and we arrived late in Istanbul Tuesday evening. However, we had a nice walk through a part of the city and were overwhelmed by the view of an ancient Mosquee, friendly people and a place where people smoked water-pipe. I’m a non-smoker, but I tried it a bit (and I did inhale!).
It was a nice experience.
In Ankara we were heartily welcomed by our hosts of the Hacettepe University. At our arrival a party was going on, which included dancing. I like dancing, so….
The next day the Conference ‘Information management in a changing world’ started with international speakers. Good papers, including the paper presented by my colleague Jos van Helvoort about information literacy in relation to the changing technology. Afterwards he was complimented by the key-note speaker Joan Lippincott.
I had the opportunity to give a short poster-presentation about our 10 weeks course ‘Werken 2.0, a course about the way social media contributes to the new way of working.
It was scheduled at the end of the day, so there wasn’t much audience, but I got nice feedback afterwards.
The next day some asked me more about my poster and even invited me to come to their country to tell the whole story! We’ll see what comes.
All the papers will by published by Sprinter Verlag, I will use them in my lessons.
The conference was very well organized with the support of many students of the faculty of information management. At the end of the conference we thanked the students for their positive and energetic attitude.
Back in Holland my Facebook is full of friendship requests and many people share their photos with each other. I’m still enjoying the trip.
