Course working 2.0 halfway!

5 weeks ago I mentioned the start of our course Working 2.0. Now the Christmas holidays start and we are halfway. What came of our plans until now?
Well, we have 10 working groups with students and every group has another task to work on: advising multinational Ahold about Google apps, creating a campaing for our National airline KLM, another task for Microsoft Netherlands and so on.
One of the projects that has a real spin-of is the publication of the book "New way of working according to Generation Y" (in Dutch...;-).
For the students it is a really exciting experience to work on a book that will be published. For our school it is good publicity of course.
The book will only be published if we can sell 2000 shares of 5,- each. We are expecting our families and friends to support us ofcourse...

More spin of: in february Jan Krans and I will give a presentation about this subject before managers, we will make a game of it.
And last but not least: thanks to the contacts I made in Ankara, I met a researcher who is interested in the 2.0 adaption of young people. Together we will do a research about the 2.0 adaption of students who did our course a year ago. What is still left of their enthousiasm for 2.0 and the new way of working after one year?

There is a lot more to tell, because in meantime I finished the first part of my master-study information science at the University of Amsterdam, and I am preparing a presentation for a conference in april. But more about that in a next blog!

Start of the new course about the new way of working

In September I gave a poster presentation at a conference in Ankara about the course “Working 2.0”.
The Hague university organizes this course every year from November-February.
During the course, students learn how social media can be used in an professional environment and how this can lead to a new way of working.
Main teacher of the course is Jan Krans, special consultant at Atos Origin, an international ICT service provider.
This week we started a new edition of the course with 65 enthusiastic students from different departments of our university. Right after the beginning the students started to open accounts on Twitter, Delicous, Foursquare, Google apps and others. Via the hashtag #kb33 on Twitter, the students share their experiences, discuss and update those who can not be present.

Jan Krans is an inspiring personality with a giant personal network. He has formulated several interesting tasks for the students: organizing events, writing advice reports about the use of Google apps in education, editing a book, advising companies about the New way of working, etc.
The studens have formed groups and each group will fulfil one of the tasks. This week was only a start, but it looks very promising!
I am proud to be part of it as coordinator, but the credits for the content are for Jan.

Istanbul and Ankara

This time a blog in English, because I want my new Turkish friends to be able to read it.

Last week I was with my collegues Willy, Klaas Jan and Jos in Istanbul and Ankara. Due to the fog in Amsterdam, our flight was delayed and we arrived late in Istanbul Tuesday evening. However, we had a nice walk through a part of the city and were overwhelmed by the view of an ancient Mosquee, friendly people and a place where people smoked water-pipe. I’m a non-smoker, but I tried it a bit (and I did inhale!).
It was a nice experience.

In Ankara we were heartily welcomed by our hosts of the Hacettepe University. At our arrival a party was going on, which included dancing. I like dancing, so….
The next day the Conference ‘Information management in a changing world’ started with international speakers. Good papers, including the paper presented by my colleague Jos van Helvoort about information literacy in relation to the changing technology. Afterwards he was complimented by the key-note speaker Joan Lippincott.

I had the opportunity to give a short poster-presentation about our 10 weeks course ‘Werken 2.0, a course about the way social media contributes to the new way of working.
It was scheduled at the end of the day, so there wasn’t much audience, but I got nice feedback afterwards.
The next day some asked me more about my poster and even invited me to come to their country to tell the whole story! We’ll see what comes.
All the papers will by published by Sprinter Verlag, I will use them in my lessons.

The conference was very well organized with the support of many students of the faculty of information management. At the end of the conference we thanked the students for their positive and energetic attitude.
Back in Holland my Facebook is full of friendship requests and many people share their photos with each other. I’m still enjoying the trip.
This was my first visit to Turkey, and it won’t be the last!

Het boek is uit!

In verschillende posts heb ik aandacht besteed aan het feit dat ik samen met 3 collega's van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam aan een boek werkte over ontsluitingstechnieken. Welnu, het is uit!
Vandaag kreeg ik van de uitgever de auteursexemplaren. Voelt toch al een bijzonder moment. Inmiddels zijn er zelfs al tientallen verkocht, aangezien het boek wordt voorgeschreven bij verschillende HBO-opleidingen tot informatiespecialist en bij GO opleidingen. Op de site van uitgever NBD-Biblion staat het boek op het moment dat ik dit schrijf nog niet vermeld, maar gelukkig besteedt GO opleidingen er op haar site al wel aandacht aan. Via de boekhandel (ook online) is het snel verkrijgbaar. Marjolein van der Linden, Henk Magrijn, Eric Sieverts en ik zijn uiteraard trots op ons werk, en we zijn benieuwd naar de reacties...

Vakantie, voetbal en andere varia

Ik heb nogal de neiging meerdere onderwerpen kort in 1 post te behandelen. Dat is deze keer niet anders. Daar gaan we dan:
- Staaltje politiek van de Fifa. De samenvatting van de wedstrijd Engeland-Duitsland op de Fifa-website bevat niet HET moment van de wedstrijd: de goal die onterecht niet werd toegekend. Reden is dat de Fifa veel kritiek krijgt op haar houding om apparatuur ter ondersteuning van de arbitrage te weigeren.
Door een gecensureerde samenvatting op de site te zetten roepen ze de vergelijking met het Noord-Koreaanse regime op, maar dan dommer: op honderden andere plekken op internet (Youtube, omroepen) is het betreffende moment natuurlijk gewoon te zien.
- Bijna vakantie, dus afronding lopende activiteiten en vooruitblikken naar de start in september. Nog 2 weken, en laten we hopen dat we in september veel nieuwe studenten kunnen begroeten. We werken hard aan de opleiding, dus daar ligt het niet aan...
- Boeken: constant in de belangstelling: digitaliseringsprojecten, e-readers, I-pad, online kopen, zelf schrijven enzovoort. Maar in welke vorm dan ook: de volgende uitspraak hoorde ik deze week van een examenkandidaat bij GO opleidingen: 'boeken praten niet, maar ze zeggen heel veel'. En zo is het maar net.
- Accreditatie: de IDM opleiding heeft het bezoek van het beoordelend panel afgesloten met een voldoende op alle punten. Hartstikke mooi natuurlijk. Belangrijk bespreekpunt bij het bezoek was de positionering en onze visie op het vak. Het was beste een pittig gesprek, maar het is wel prettiger om hierover een verhaal te houden dan over allerlei procedures en regels waar een opleiding aan moet voldoen.

We leven nog!

Gezelligheid kent geen tijd, zeker als je nagaat dat zowel Kerst als Pasen is verstreken sinds mijn vorige blog (ja het was gezellig, dank je).
Niets beleefd sinds mijn vorige blog?
Eigenlijk teveel, vandaar dat het bloggen er bij in schoot.
Een kleine update dan maar:
- Het boek nadert zijn afronding: En de titel wordt: 'Organiseer je informatie: aan de slag met thesauri, taxonomieen, tags en topics'.
Als het goed is, verschijnt het beging september bij NBD-Biblion.
Vorige week hadden mede-auteurs Marjolein van der Linden, Henk Magrijn, Eric Sieverts en ikzelf een heuse foto-shoot voor de kaft. Ben zelf ook benieuwd naar het resultaat.
- Inmiddels ben ik bezig met het derde onderwijsblok van mijn studie Culturele Informatiewetenschap aan de UVA. De eerste twee zijn gelukkig met een voldoende afgerond. Dit blok gaat over de informatievoorziening binnen organisaties. Dat heeft mijn grote interesse. Het blok is een mooie mix van theorie (pittig boek van Choo: the knowing organization) en praktijk: het schrijven van een informatieplan. Gaat ook lekker.
- De minor 'werken 2.0' die ik mag organiseren ism Atos Origin heeft weer gedraaid. Hoogtepunten waren bezoeken aan Microsoft, Google, Vodaphone en IBM. Maar het belangrijkste is dat studenten enthousiast waren en aangaven veel te hebben geleerd.
- ALs spin-off van deze minor heb ik een proposal ingestuurd voor het congres 'Information management in a changing world' in september in Ankara. Deze week kreeg ik bericht dat mijn voorstel is geaccepteerd. Nu nog mijn Engels bijschaven.
- 22 april organiseren we met IDM onze jaarlijkse Alumni-conferentie. Thema is: Indrukwekkende interfaces voor informatie. Meer info en aanmelden kan hier
- En verder hebben we de accreditatie voor IDM op stapel staan in juni en lopen er weer vele onderwijsactiviteiten. Over lopen gesproken: bij de CPC loop in Den Haag liep ik eindelijk sinds 2 jaar weer eens de 10 km onder de 50 minuten...

Ik beloof dat ik weer eens wat vaker zal bloggen, en dan wat meer beschouwend over 1 onderwerp.
